Val Stephenson MA

The rhythm of my footsteps
The light through the trees
The sound of the birds
A glimpse of the horizon
The angle of the bough of a tree
The sky
Folds of land
Tussocks of grass
The sun casting shadows
Dapples and pools of light

All these are recorded rapidly in charcoal in a large sketchbook. I draw as I briskly walk. I neither pause nor stop so that the sketches are glimpses and incomplete snatches capturing the essence of being there in that landscape, without being tied down by detail and representation.

Back at the studio these sketches are the basis of the paintings you see here. I aim to impart light, energy and spontaneity to the paintings. They are about life, a 'good to be alive' feeling, right here and right now.
